Language Translation – Language Links for October 2011…

…or the one where I create a plan to catch up with some of the interesting language-related stories that I wasn’t able to get to over the past month.

I’ve been blogging for nearly 7 years now, and I would say that actually writing a blog post is way less than half the battle.

The real work lies in skimming over reams of information and answering the crucial question: what should I write about today?

While it’s sometimes hard to find or create THE story that I think/hope will capture your attention, there is never any shortage of potential information.

That’s why I’ve decided to start an end-of-the-month post called “Language Links.”

This will be a place to round up those potential and interesting story lines related to language, translation, and the language service industry that somehow didn’t make the month’s blogging calendar.

Since I’ve said a lot already, I’ll limit this month’s choice to 3:

1.    A new play features, and is in fact called, “Chinglish.” Its main subject – seriously – is miscommunication between American and Chinese businesspeople.

2.    Lifehack suggests 5 Strategies for Marketing Your Foreign Language E-commerce Website. They’re pretty much the same strategies you should use to market any e-commerce website – but then again, why wouldn’t they be?

3.    Specific fields engender highly specialized vocabulary that can be a nightmare to translate. I’ve written about this with regards to baseball; here’s a look at the same concept as it applies to the language of traditional Irish dance.
