Language Translation – Language interpretation aids in occupational risk management

Providing language interpretation services can be a key to getting injured workers back on the job.

Language interpretation services in medical settings are clearly desirable for L.E.P. (Limited English Proficiency) patients, as we have discussed many times in this blog. They are essential for accurate treatment, cost reduction, and patients’ emotional comfort.

When patients are also workers, an injury or illness can bring up another issue requiring language interpretation: determining appropriate leave time, capacity or incapacity to work, and workers’ compensation.

A recent article by Sheena Harrison explains some of the links between language interpretation services and occupational risk management. Entitled “Interpreters needed due to rise in immigrant workers,” the piece, published on BusinessInsurance.com, presents a balanced analysis of the question.

Harrison doesn’t hide that these services come at a certain cost; in fact, the question of “who should pay for what” has become controversial, especially in California.

The general conclusion of her interviewees, however, points to a long-term financial gain for employers who invest in interpreting services to help settle workers’ compensation issues.

Using interpreters in work-related illness and injury cases could even save money in the long run. “It's probably going to be cost-effective for you to do this, because you want to have the proper immediate post-injury procedure,” Ms. Shafer of Amaxx Risk Solutions said.
