Language Translation – Language and culture: forever entwined

Language influences culture, and culture influences language.

Language and culture are inextricably linked.

When you think about it, the way a term is used can create a whole new mindset.

For example, the term “geek” used to be an insult referring to a freak; the word’s meaning has evolved, and with it, a new conception of a type of person has emerged.

Being a geek (or being seen as a geek) isn’t half as bad as it used to be – we can say that our culture has embraced our geeks.

Similarly, cultural phenomena can lead to the creation of new words, and open up whole new ways of speaking.

The term “rock and roll” was first used in the 40s, before the music considered as rock and roll had taken hold. But once rock and roll music truly established itself, all sorts of expressions derived from it: to rock out, to rock on, and the now decidedly unmusical compliment “You rock!”

In fact, I would say that nearly every word in a language has rich cultural connotations, and nearly every cultural phenomenon can create new language.

The subject is endless.
