Language Translation – Divided in translation

The American Translators Association’s divisions showcase a wide range of translation specialties.

The American Translators Association, or ATA, boasts 11,000 members in over 90 countries. Membership privileges are extended not only to translators, but to “interpreters, teachers, project managers, web and software developers, language company owners, hospitals, universities, and government agencies.”

As is the case with many professional associations, the ATA offers members the possibility of participating in divisions, or special interest groups. The diversity of these groups demonstrates clearly how the translation field is divided into specialties.

The Association has 16 divisions, and one could certainly imagine the possibility for more. The biggest division category is language-based groups: 8 divisions focus on a specific language.

Two other divisions are devoted to a group of languages. The Slavic Languages Division represents a mind-spinning range of tongues, from Belarusian to Ukrainian. The Nordic division specializes in well-known languages such as Swedish and Danish, but also in Greenlandic and Faroese.

The remaining divisions devote their time to different language fields: interpretation, medical, literary, scientific, language technology, and language translation companies.

Language Translation, Inc. is proud to be affiliated with the American Translators Association.
