Language Translation – Guggenheim exhibit to focus on translation theme

I’ve never seen an art exhibit about translation, and I’ll probably never see one…

…but it’s certainly interesting to know that one is going to take place at one of the U.S.’s top museums.

Indeed, an exhibit sponsored by the “Deutsche Bank Series at the Guggenheim” will display work by artists who have taken inspiration from the field of translation.

The show will be held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York from February 11 to May 1, 2011.

I’ve never really thought about how translation could inspire works of art – but apparently at least eleven film artists have, and their work will be presented under the exhibit title Found in Translation.”

A press release from WebWire explains that “language is experienced in real time”; thus film and video are the ideal media to express translation concepts artistically.

“With political, economic, and social issues intertwined across national boundaries, translation has become a fundamental tool, linguistically and figuratively, for making sense of reality,” explains the Deutsche Bank USA website. “Taking this concept as a model, Found in Translation presents recent videos and films that investigate the ways cultural difference is negotiated through written or spoken language.”

The show will move to the Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin, in early 2012.
