City of Los Angeles launches election outreach campaign in 10 languages
It’s called “L.A. City Votes!” and it’s a campaign aimed at expanding voter outreach efforts by educating and supporting voters with translation and other language services, in preparation for the 2013 municipal elections to be held on March 5 and May 21.
Language translation support for the campaign will be provided in Hindi, Thai, Armenian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese. Promotional outreach materials will be printed in all these languages to ensure that voters with limited-English proficiency are well informed and feel included in the election process.
According to the Los Angeles City Clerk’s office, these language translation efforts are in addition to those for the production of official election documents, such as sample ballots, polling place signs and other voter materials that are already translated into multiple languages.
“We love the diversity of Los Angeles and we want all voters, including those who are limited-English proficient to take advantage of the resources that we are making available to them,” said City Clerk June Lagmay.
“This is the first time that our city’s election division has enlisted the support of non-partisan voter advocacy community organizations to register, inform and mobilize Angelinos to take part in their local government and to turn out for the 2013 municipal elections which are just around the corner.”
Los Angeles County, with nearly 10 million people, is the most heavily populated county in the United States by far and is also one of the most ethnically diverse.
If you want to vote in the March 5, 2013 primary election, the deadline to register to vote is Feb. 19. For more information, visit the city clerk's office Web site.
