30 different languages now supported by Twitter
Back in March, we reported that Twitter had completed work to support right-to-left languages for the first time with the addition of Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew and Urdu.
Then in May we brought you the news that Twitter had opened its language translation center for six new languages: Catalan, Afrikaans, Ukrainian, Greek, Czech and Basque. These six were the languages most requested, and Twitter has since been crowdsourcing translators for all of them, ensuring that the quality, consistency and unified voice of its volunteers were in its tools - via automation.
Now, according to Twitter’s official blog, two of these languages are available for all users to see and change their language settings to - Catalan and Ukrainian.
“The translations you see live on Twitter.com are based on translation completion and community approval. In order to use Twitter in Catalan or Ukrainian, please go to your language settings today,” wrote Laura Gomez, a member of Twitter’s International Team of volunteer translators.
Twitter encourages users to watch for translations that don’t work and then to log in to the translation center where they can vote for a better choice. They’re also looking for language translators for Afrikaans, Basque, Czech and/or Greek, the languages that they’re looking to release support for next.
You can visit Twitter’s translation center and follow @translator if you’re interested in getting involved.
